Five iconic moments from the "As Long As You Love Me" music video
Today is Friday, October 21, 2016, and that means one thing - the Backstreet Boys' song "As Long As You Love Me" was released 19 years ago. That's right, on October 21, 1997, the Kristian Lundin/Max Martin-penned hit was released as the second single from the boys' U.S. debut album. The song was previously released a month earlier in other parts of the world.
While the song (and video) was continuously played on MTV at the time and spent 56 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart, it was never officially released as a commercial single in the U.S. Didn't stop it from being a hit, did it? The amazing music video definitely helped with that.
And let's not forget that Brian Littrell met the future Leighanne Littrell on the set of the music video. At the time she was an inspiring actress, having had small parts in various movies and other music videos.
We took to the fans and asked via the Fan Club, Facebook, and Twitter to find out what fans thought were the most iconic moments of the Nigel Dick masterpiece that we know as the "As Long As You Love Me" music video.
5. CLOSE UPS
"This to me is the most iconic part of the video," Stephanie Mayse of Kentucky said. "This is when you realize just how beautiful Brian really is."
"For me the most iconic moment of the 'As Long As You Love Me' video is Nick Carter's opening verse with the microphone," Patti Fore of South Carolina said. "Those blue eyes captured my teen heart and never gave it back!"
4. ACTING
"Me?" Nick asks as he holds a baseball bat upside down and AJ looks at him curiously. Was this the beginning of what we went on to see in "The Hollow" and "Dead 7"? Or would we have Kevin and "The Casserole Club" without his little acting in this music video?
Not to mention the boys trying to act all cool in their weird outfits, like Brian's "Cowboys 'R' Us /AJ look-alike," as he called in during the making of the music video.
3. TABLES HAVE TURNED
Another iconic moment in the music video is when the Backstreet Boys take the remote control away from the girls and turn the table on them.
2. MORPHING
Other music videos have tried to copy the effect of the boys morphing into one another. Even Saturday Night Live has tried to parody it with a music video.
"When Kevin becomes Howie and he winked with his beautiful face," Sweety Dorough on the Official BSB Fan Club said.
1. THE CHAIR ROUTINE
Out of all tweets, comments, or messages, the chair dance was by far the most popular and iconic moment in the music video according to fans.
"All I gotta say is CHAIR DANCE, CHAIR DANCE, CHAIR DANCE, BABY," Nichole Meighoo of Canada said. "Whenever they bust out those chairs and do that routine, we lose our minds."
Camilla Marangoni of Brazil agreed.
"When they change one to another with the chair on the dance routine," Marangoni said.
"I actually miss seeing (the chair routine) in concert," Jhie Grisola added.
